Types of Internet Services :

WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW)

-Consist of a worldwide collection of electronic documents.Each electronic document called web page which can contain text,graphic,animation,audio and video.Have built in conections to other documents.

  • Static (fixed) - visitor see all the same content.
  • Dynamic - visitor can customize some or all of the viewed content such as desired stock quotes,weather for a region or ticket availability for flights.
E-MAIL



-Short for electronic mail.
-Transmission of messages and files via a computer network.Consist of simple text or can contain attachment such as documents,graphics,audio or video clips.
-Google and Yahoo! provide free e -mail services.
-An e-mail address is a unique name that consist of a user name and domain name that identifies the user.
-Basic form :
username@hostname.subdomain.domain

Eg :  amir@gmail.com
         hanizan@kmph.matrik.edu.my



User name
A unique combinatopn of character such as letters of the alphabet or number that identified the specific user.
User name must be different from other user.
@
(Pronounced as at) symbols separates the user name from domain name.
Address book/contact folder
Contain a list of names and e-mail address.
SMTP ( simple mail transfer protocol)
A communications protocol used by some outgoing mail servers.
POP3 ( post office protocol )
A comunication protocol used by some incoming mail servers.



INSTANT MESSAGING



-A real time Internet communications service that notifies you when one or more people online and allows you to exchanges messages or files or join a private chat room with them.
-Real time : you and that people online at the same time.
-Popular IM :
  • AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)
  • Google Talk
  • MySpace IM
  • Windows Live Messenger
  • Yahoo! Messenger
VOICE OVER INTERNET PROTOCOL (VoIP)



-A technology for making telephone calls over the internet in which speech sounds are converted into binary data.
- In common terms is phone service over the internet,also called Internet Telephony.
- To connect a calling party to one or more local or long distance parties.
- To place a phone call,you need :
  • a high speed Internet connection (such as DSL or Cable Modem)
  • Internet telephone services
  • a microphone or a telephone
  • internet telephone software or VoIP router.
- Also available on some mobile services that have wireless internet services.

MESSAGE BOARD



- Type of discussion group. ( Also known as discussion group,discussion forum and online forum).
- Many web site use message board because they are easy to use.
- A general term for any online buletin "bulletin board" where you can leave and expect to see responses to messages you have left.
- Does not required newsreader.


FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL


- An internet standard taht permits file uploading and downloading with other computer on the internet.
- A standard for the exchange of program and data files across a network.
- Uploading : the process of transferring documents,graphics and other objects from computer to a server on the Internet.
